Runecrafting is a skill that allows players to make their own runes for Magic spells. This skill requires completion of the Rune Mysteries quest to proceed with it. The runes are created at altars by binding Rune essence with the power of the altar.

Overview

Runecrafting requires rune essence. Rune essence can either be mined at the rune essence mine or obtained as drops from certain mobs. To teleport to the rune essence mine, talk to Aubury in Varrock's magic shop (-258 / 64 / -387) or Traiborn in the Wizards' Tower. Rune essence does not stack in the inventory so obtaining it can take time. However, some mobs drop noted Rune essence which allows for lengthened farming of it.

After acquiring a desired amount of Rune essence, the player needs to travel to one of the 11 rune altars located across Minescape while carrying the essence with them. Using the essence on an altar imbues it with the altar's power, turning it into runes of that altar's type.

The essence must be unnoted in order to be imbued. Talismans are not required to do Runecrafting.

Crafting multiple runes

As the player levels up in Runecrafting, they will unlock the ability to create multiple runes from a single essence. The table below shows the levels at which a single essence is made into an increased number of runes for each type of rune.

• Mobs such as Banshee, Ankou, and Abyssal demons can also drop noted Rune essence.
