This article has a guide here.

Smithing is a skill in which players smelt ores into metal bars which can be used in the Crafting skill or forged into metal items. Ores and bars can be obtained by Mining them, from monster drops or by pickpocketing. Stockpiling ores allows for continuous, uninterrupted smithing. Another method is to mine ores, proceed to a furnace with full inventory and bank the newly made bars. Alternatively, the bars can be made into metal items which can be banked as well. The best place to smith / smelt is Edgeville -680 / 70 / -670
The Basics[]
There are two primary things to smithing: ores and bars. Ores need be taken to a furnace with which they are made into bars. Bars need to be taken to an anvil, which is used to turn bars into other items, such as weapons and armour.
Smithing requires a lot of ores. The most important ore is coal as it is needed throughout the skill, starting from steel. To train Smithing efficiently, all the required ores and bars should be available in the player's bank. This makes it possible to fill the inventory with ores quickly, run to the closest furnace and smelt the ores into bars which can then be banked for later use. For bars the process is similar except that instead of a furnace, the bars need to be taken to an anvil.
Stockpiling ores requires one to find an ore rock of the desired ore that is closest to a bank. Simply filling the inventory by mining the ore and banking once the inventory is full is enough. Repeat as many times as necessary to accumulate enough ores. As mentioned above, stockpiling bars requires running between a furnace and a bank. However, for higher level ores, it may be more time efficient to use superheat[1] spell in a bank to smelt ores into bars as only a few bars can be smelt per a trip to a furnace.
Alternatively, monsters can be killed for ores and bars. Depending on the player's combat level this may be more or less effective way to gather ores and bars. Drops may be uncommon or rare, which leads to low obtaining rates. It is important that the player is able to kill the monster efficiently to obtain good drop rates for ores and bars and that the monster drops the goods often enough. Same applies to pickpocketing.
Given that the player has stockpiled enough ores and bars, the best place to train smithing is Edgeville. The eastern most furnace and anvil are closest to a bank in game, making it the ideal spot.
For the first 20 to 30 levels, the Taverley's White Wolf Mountain's inner mine is a great place to train smithing. Just outside the mine there is a furnace and an anvil. Though the closest bank and general store are quite a distance away so it may be better to throw away the crafted items in order to keep training. Another option is to smith arrowheads as they stack and only require one inventory space.
This guide is not absolute. Mix and match and try different things until you find a way to train smithing that suits you the best.

Smelting[]
Smelting is the first step to train your smithing and obtaining metal items. Every bar needs a specific set of ores and the requirements get more expensive the higher tiered the bar is. You can use furnaces to smelt ores into bars, which are found at several locations throughout Minescape. The table below explains in more detail what ores are needed for each type of bar.

Note that smelting ores to bars in the Artisans' workshop provides you with a 10% chance to produce an extra bar with no extra ores consumed.
- [1] Smelting Iron Bars has a 45% success rate. Ring of forging increases this to 100%
- [2] Smelting Iron Bars while wearing Ring of forging gives more xp per inventory than smelting Bronze Bars as it requires less ores per bar
- [3] 1 Graphite can be used in place of Coal when smelting Adamant and Runite
Forging[]
Forging is the process of turning bars into metal items. This is done by interacting with an anvil. Each bar has its unique set of items, with different smithing requirements for each item.
Forging items in the Artisans' workshop has a 10% chance to save a single bar and still produce the item.
Bronze[]
As one of the first metals you will work with, it is important to note that the grind to level 15 Smithing won't be easy. If you choose to gather your own ores, make sure you gather in a 1:1 ratio of Copper and Tin ore. Lumbridge Mine will be very useful to you in the start for your Copper and Tin needs. Lumbridge itself has a furnace and an anvil near a general store to which the crafted goods can be sold to. Another good though more remote location to begin Smithing training is the White Wolf Mountain's inner mine, located in Taverley. It offers Copper and Tin and has a furnace and an anvil right ouside the mine. Unlike Lumbridge, there are no banks or general stores near the White Wolf Mountain's inner mine. This is something to consider when choosing a starting spot. One option is to smith arrow heads as they are stackable.
Refer to the Mining skill page to learn more about the location of various mines containing Copper and Tin Rocks.

Iron[]
The second metal you will be using on your quest to becoming a master smith! Working with iron bars gives the same xp as Bronze items. Smelting Iron Ore has a 45% success rate. Failed smelting attempts give nothing. However you have a better xp/hour rate when smelting Iron than smelting Bronze Bars when using Ring of forging as it increases the success rate to 100%.

Silver[]
Silver you will reach at level 20 Smithing. Although you cannot make anything with it at an anvil, this does not disqualify it from being a decent training method. Silver only requires one ore to smelt into a bar and grants 11.5XP per smelt. (11.5x36=414XP per inventory) Silver is also used in some Recipes in the crafting skill and may prove useful if you choose to train crafting in the future.
Steel[]
Steel is the first metal that uses coal as part of the smelting process. Smelting Steel Bars requires level 30 Smithing. It is wise to start stockpiling coal now, as you will burn through it rather fast. Smelting 100 bars of steel will consume 200 coal. Despite this, Steel gives almost twice as much XP as Silver does, providing another method of training Smithing at a faster pace, Smelting on forge ~28-30k XP/hr, Superheating ~80-90k XP/hr (Note: Superheating is click intensive), Smithing on anvil ~75-250k XP/hr (fastest XP/hr with plate bodies)
| Item | Level | XP | Bars used | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Steel dagger | 30 | 42 | 1x | |
| Steel hatchet | 30 | 42 | 1x | |
| Steel pickaxe | 30 | 42 | 1x | |

Gold[]
Gold, like Silver, only requires one ore to smelt, so the same strategy exists of carrying full inventories of Gold Ore to the furnace to smelt in batches. Giving 28 xp per ore Gold is a good method of training (1008XP per inventory), Gold is also used in some Recipes in the crafting skill and will prove useful if you choose to train crafting in the future. Smelting on a forge ~19-20k XP/hr, Superheating ~90-100k XP/hr (Note: Superheating is click intensive)
Mithril[]
Enjoy that break from steel? Well, Mithril is here and is ready to consume TWICE the amount of coal that steel did. On the plus side, you get way more XP for it. If you haven't been stockpiling coal, it is strongly suggested you do so now. As a reference point, 400 coal is needed to smelt only 100 Mithril bars.
| Item | Level | XP | Bars used | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mithril dagger | 50 | 104 | 1x | |
| Mithril hatchet | 50 | 104 | 1x | |
| Mithril pickaxe | 50 | 104 | 1x | |

Adamant[]
There is a long and Coal hungry road ahead! Adamant is a strong but expensive metal to smelt, requiring a hefty 6 pieces of coal to do so. The amount of coal need only allows for 5 bars per inventory to be smelt, so find a furnace near a bank! The XP rates Adamant offers are great, and given you have the materials, you will level up to the next stage in no time.
| Item | Level | XP | Bars used | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Adamant dagger | 70 | 176 | 1x | |
| Adamant hatchet | 70 | 176 | 1x | |

Rune[]
The final frontier, Rune is an extremely rare metal and only the most skilled smiths can work it. Consuming 8 coal per bar, it is the most resource-intensive material in the Smithing world. It grants large amounts of XP but gathering the ore and coal necessary to mass-produce it may come as a challenge.
