Thieving
Thieving skill guide

Thieving is a support skill that allows to steal from mobs and stalls. Emptying pockets can be quite lucrative and net a hefty sum early on. Later levels offer an alternative way to obtain items and resources such as food and ores. Higher level mobs offer more rewarding pickpockets as well.

Training[]

To pick pockets, crouch and right click an entity to attempt stealing. A successful attempt rewards experience and possibly items from the target's thieving drop table. It is possible to earn multiple drops with each success.

After successfully stealing from a target, they enter a state of high alert lasting 40 seconds during which it becomes much harder to successfully pick pocket from them. During high alert, an entity only gives roughly 10% of the normal experience when stolen from. High alert also prevents item drops to be obtained. Successful pickpocket attempts during high alert further decrease the experience and increases the chances of being caught.

Failed pickpocket attempts lead to getting caught which causes a stun, lasting a few seconds. Stun slows movement, prevents sprinting, impairs vision and also deals a small amount of damage. The entity will also go into high alert mode.

An efficient way to train thieving is to find an area with several entities of the same type and pick their pockets one after another to avoid the high alert cooldown period.

Stalls[]

Thieving from stalls is an alternative method for training Thieving for those who want a less intensive option. To steal from a stall, interact with it by right clicking and you will receive the XP and an item related to the type of stall. An item will appear to be removed from the stall, and after a cooldown it will reappear and you can steal from the stall again.

Tips[]

  • Because the high alert cooldown is so long, for the lower level mobs the best strategy is to find a small group of 2-3 and pickpocket them and kill them. This way, they will be forced to respawn and the normal cooldown will be negated.
  • Failure rates for each mob are higher at their required level and decrease as you level up more, so it is recommended to level your Thieving above a mob's required level before moving on to that mob, otherwise your XP rates will be lower than if you stayed at the lower level mob. For example, Al-Kharid warriors require 25 Thieving but it would be better to wait until level 30 before starting them. Beekeepers require 58 Thieving but are best started around level 70.
  • Some mobs, like Barbarians, are highly spread out. Using speed potions would be highly advantageous, allowing moving around more quickly and cut down the time travelling between each entity.
